Slide Ranch Master Plan and Farm-to-Table Education Center
Date
Completed 2017
Role
Project Architect (while @ Mark Cavagnero Associates)
The master planning for Marin-based non-profit Slide Ranch - dedicated to connecting children with nature - involved evaluating its 134-acre site within Golden Gate National Recreation Area with a focus on both educational program delivery and environmental considerations.
The proposal, in addition to its design of their site and facilities, identified income-generating opportunities for the non-profit. It also emphasized responsible natural resource consumption. For example, existing site hose bibs were repurposed as educational tools, with integrated gardens utilizing excess water to sustain plant life.
The conceptual design for the Farm-to-Table Education Center was developed to feature educational spaces including a demonstration kitchen, indoor classroom, and an outdoor patio with kitchen area. Sliding doors were placed to help expand the effective indoor teaching kitchen space. The design envisioned that greywater piping from the new teaching center would passively water a proposed orchard, leveraging the unique compatibility of orchards to be watered with greywater. This approach integrated the teaching center’s operations into the supporting infrastructure of the productive landscape.
Conceptual drawings were provided to a Design/Build Contractor for final execution.
